* Note the different format given in penetrations, didn't bother
to fix that, as the CPR gun is more often used on vehicles, and
the HMG on personnel.

I threw this design together after long ignorance of my TNE
material. I just wanted to test out few lower tech things a
bit, and tried to make a nice assault tank initially. Then I
noticed that a vehicle of this size does not take too well
for a full sized turret (I would run out of space even with
one crewstation in it, as would be required), so I decided to
change it to simple, low-cost assault vehicle instead.
Note that because of the 2-man crew, only one of the weapons
can be fired at any one time, as the gunner can hardly
concentrate on both. The small turret mounting the machinegun
is on the top of the vehicle, and has full 360 degree fire
arc.

If u spot any flaws in the design (there might be some, like
I said, this was my first design in a long while), please
notify me so I can correct them. I do have the design notes
of this thing still, though at the moment they are barely
readable... ;) However, I will type those up if anyone wants
them.

PS. As a footnote, I have done few other designs after this
(mainly checking out old MT designs from the 101 Vehicles),
and have noticed that creating small low-tech vehicles is
real hard with these rules, and installing a regular
turret is practically impossible.
Otherwise this wouldn't bother me so much, but I would like to
use disp 2-5 low tech tanks in my game, and the multipliers
on the volume of turrets forces me to adapt small turrets,
which are the only-ones that can be remoted mounted. As even
at this tech level 6 any crewstation in the turret would take
out *14* cubic meters of volume!
Anyone else had this problem before? If so, any solutions to it?

Hello everybody,

sorry for the stupid question, but I'm new both to Traveller and this
list. I just skimmed over the rules for Briliant Lances and Fire,
Fusion and Steel, and there is one thing I don't understand:

why are all the ship-to-ship missiles nuclear-powered laser warheads?
Why doesn't anyone use simple nuclear warheads instead?

In Brilliant Lances, the missiles have to reach the hex the target is
located in, so there is no advantage (in game terms) in firing a
laser from some (relatively close) distance, as opposed to moving
near the target and detonating a warhead (like better survivability
of the missile due to lesser likelihood of being shot down. Doesn't
apply if you have to reach the target's hex).

Am I missing something? Do I misinterpret a rule? Any hints?

I like the systems introduced in FF&S (although I haven't tested them
thoroughly yet). They give you a lot of freedom, and explain neatly
why things are as they are. Everywhere, that is, except in the case
of the space missiles...

Well, excuse my ignorance, and thanks a lot for any clues...

Joerg

* The Earthsteward announced today that the Empire of Aztlan has declared
war upon the Commonwealth. Speaking from the Stewards' Hall, Mr. Cevera
indicated that the Empire's Ambassador had delivered the formal
Declaration earlier today. The State of War became effective today and
was delivered simultaneously with a formal announcement on Aztlan in
Procyon District.

* The Earthsteward called for resolve on the part of the citizenry in
facing this crisis. "We will defend ourselves and protect our freedom
throughout the Colonies Sphere," he said in a live address that will be
broadcast on all Commonwealth worlds. "Let no one forget who is the
aggressor here. The Empire of Aztlan has long sought the way of the
warrior over that of the diplomat. While we would prefer the latter we
are well prepared and determined to oppose former."

* Speaking after the Earthsteward, Security Affairs Minister Fokin
suggested that Aztlan forces had already begun hostilities in Pollux
District. "The Empire's military forces have been probing our defenses
in Pollux for months now," she said. "They will soon learn that they
have miscalculated gravely. We have more than sufficient force in Pollux
and neighboring districts to repulse any Aztlan incursion."

* A source in the Security Ministry said an Aztlan assault upon Earth was
unlikely. The source suggested Aztlan strategy would seek to intimidate
independent worlds in Pollux and neighboring districts through assaults
upon Commonwealth forces in the region. The source indicated that the
Declaration was not unanticipated in the Ministry and that Commonwealth
forces in Pollux had been reinforced in recent months.

* "The campaign will most likely be centered around the world of
Prometheus," said the source. Prometheus in a member of the Commonwealth
and its population is nearly six billion. "While the Aztlan have no hope
of overcoming the defenses at Prometheus they might be able to cut the
world off by seizing neighboring systems," continued the source. "The
challenge for our forces will be to prevent that from occurring."

* A spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Ministry indicated that the
Commonwealth had briefed the Missions of several Colonial States but that
most had insisted upon the need to consult with their Governments before
taking a position upon the State of War. The Commonwealth has no
alliances with major Colonial States nor does the Empire. A source
within the Ministry suggested that the major Colonial States would remain
neutral in the conflict.**

                          Introducing . . .

                         *MELBOURNE TIMES*

*Melbourne Times* is a quarterly fanzine dedicated to the development of
the Earth Colonies campaign background for science fiction role-playing
games. This generic campaign background is compatible with any RPG rules
set.

The Earth Colonies campaign is focused on 31st Century Earth and its
surrounding interstellar community. The campaign utilizes a
three-dimensional campaign area - actual three-dimensional maps of
Earth's interstellar neighborhood will be used for the campaign.

Other unique features abound. There are several rival states -
independent communities originally settled from Earth: the expansionist
Empire of Aztlan, the cosmopolitan Federation of Nyanza, the mercantile
Ouroran Community, the missionary Abrahamic Synod, and several others, as
well as the Commonwealth of Earth itself.

There are completely new non-human races: the terrestrial Dolphins -
co-equal partners with Humans, the aerial Aeroi who abhor violence but
dominate interstellar trade in the Colonies Sphere, and the aquarian
Meren who often resort to militarism in their quest to control hospitable
hydrospheres. As many as 24 other alien races may border the Colonies
Sphere.

Technological capability of the Commonwealth and the major Colonial
States, as well as of the Aeroi and Meren, represents a campaign peak.
Interstellar travel is not commonplace with four parsecs per week speeds
only available to the most advanced military and technical users. The
vast, low-density stellar neighborhood of the Colonies Sphere adds some
interesting aspects to star travel.

The most unique aspect of the Earth Colonies campaign is its newness and
vitality. Much of the region has yet to be explored, and even less has
been 'developed' by the campaign developers. There are rich
opportunities for both developers and players in the undiscovered country
of the Colonies Sphere.

don't have any players. Too bad GDW hasn't provided instructions on creating

I have a lot of BL stuff, too, but I'm gonna clean it up a little.

A lot of the ideas for KKMs had their start on the gdw-beta list. When I get
all this stuff on my homepage, I'll have a bibliography.

As for the FIMs, they're not hard to design (who am I kidding, they're no
harder to design than any other missile---which is a pain :)

The real problem is making rules for *using* them in BR/BL. It isn't too bad
if you assume they're pretty smart, because you can just drive them like
ships.
I am working on homing rules that require FIMs to operate in a certain
way---if
you shoot a FIM under the same conditions, it should do more or less the same
thing it did last time (under same cond.s).

-Merrick

PS-Most of my BL stuff is related to sensors. Andrew (AD Venturer) has some
really great stuff in this area as well. His rules are more of a total
rewrite
of the sensor rules than mine are, but I like them a lot. Mine are better if
you need a system of optional rules that sit on top of the existing BL rules,

but since so many of the BL rules are screwy, either one will work (now I
just
need to clean mine up, and get it on my homepage).
